What to Expect at Your First Med Spa Visit: A First-Timer's Guide
For a lot of people, the hesitation with med spa treatments isn't about the treatments themselves. It's about not knowing what to expect. Will it feel clinical and cold? Will someone try to sell you an expensive package before you've had a chance to think? Will you walk out with results that don't look like you?
These are fair concerns, and they're worth addressing directly. Here's exactly what your first visit to Aurelian looks like, from the moment you book to the moment you walk out the door — and what to keep in mind as you're deciding whether a med spa is right for you.
First, Understand What a Med Spa Actually Is
A med spa sits somewhere between a traditional day spa and a medical clinic. It offers aesthetic treatments that go beyond what a regular spa can provide (things like laser treatments, radiofrequency devices, injectables, and medical-grade facials) but in an environment that feels more comfortable and less sterile than a hospital or dermatology office.
The key word in "medical spa" is medical. Unlike a day spa where treatments are performed by licensed aestheticians working within a cosmetic scope, a med spa operates under physician oversight. At Aurelian Med Spa specifically, every treatment is performed and overseen by board-certified internal medicine physicians rather than technicians or aestheticians working under a physician who may never actually be in the building. This distinction matters significantly for both your safety and your results, and it's one of the first things worth asking about when evaluating any med spa.
Before Your Appointment
Once you've booked your consultation, there are a few things worth doing in advance to make the most of your visit.
Think about what's bothering you most. You don't need to arrive with a treatment in mind or a diagnosis of your own skin concerns. But having a general sense of what you're hoping to address (e.g. fine lines, uneven skin tone, sun damage, skin laxity, or something else entirely) helps your provider focus the consultation on what actually matters to you rather than giving you a generic overview of everything on the menu.
Come with a clean face if possible. For a skin-focused consultation, arriving without heavy makeup gives your provider a clearer picture of your baseline skin and makes for a more accurate assessment. It's not mandatory, but it's helpful.
Write down your medications and supplements. This is one that patients frequently overlook, but it matters. Certain medications (blood thinners, retinoids, some antibiotics) affect how skin responds to laser treatments and injectables. Your provider will ask, and having a list ready saves time and ensures nothing gets missed.
Arrive without expectations about leaving with a treatment. Your first visit is a consultation. You're not obligated to book anything, purchase anything, or make any decisions on the spot. A practice that pressures you to commit before you're ready is a red flag — and it's not how we operate at Aurelian Med Spa.
The Consultation: What Actually Happens
At Aurelian, your consultation is with one of our board-certified physicians. Not a sales coordinator, not a patient care manager, not someone whose role is to convert you into a booking. You sit down with a real doctor who is going to look at your skin, ask you questions, and give you an honest assessment.
The conversation typically covers a few key areas. Your provider will ask about your skincare history. What you're currently using, what you've tried in the past, and what's worked or hasn't. They'll ask about your medical history and any medications you're taking, which is relevant not just for safety screening but for understanding factors that may be contributing to your skin concerns. They'll ask about your lifestyle (how much sun exposure you get, whether you smoke, how much sleep you're getting) because all of those things show up in skin in ways that inform treatment planning.
Then they'll look at your skin. Not just glance at it: actually examine it, assess it, and talk to you about what they're seeing. At Aurelian, that assessment is informed by the same clinical rigor that goes into a primary care appointment, because your provider is a physician first and an aesthetic practitioner second. That means skin changes that might warrant a medical conversation get flagged, not ignored.
From there, your provider will walk you through what they think would actually help and why. Not every concern requires an aggressive treatment plan. Not every patient is a candidate for every treatment. An honest provider tells you both of those things when they're true, even when it means recommending something simpler or less expensive than what you came in expecting.
If You Decide to Move Forward
If you choose to book a treatment at or after your consultation, here's a general sense of what the experience looks like depending on what you're having done.
For non-invasive treatments like XERF, Laser Genesis, or LimeLight IPL, you'll typically arrive to your treatment appointment with clean skin, no makeup, and ideally having avoided significant sun exposure in the days prior. Your provider will walk you through what the treatment feels like before starting, and check in with you throughout the session. Most of these treatments involve little to no downtime. You can return to your normal routine the same day, with the primary post-treatment instruction being diligent SPF application and avoiding direct sun exposure for a specified window.
For RF Microneedling, a topical numbing cream is applied before the treatment begins, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes to take effect. The treatment itself typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the areas being treated. Mild redness and some pinpoint bleeding are normal immediately after, and most patients experience a day or two of redness and minor swelling before the skin settles. Results build gradually over the following weeks as collagen production ramps up.
Regarding injectables like Botox or Dysport, the appointment is typically brief (15 to 30 minutes in most cases). There's no numbing required for most patients, though a topical can be applied if you prefer. Minor redness or swelling at injection sites is normal and typically resolves within a few hours. Results from neurotoxins develop over three to seven days and last three to four months on average.
What Good Results Actually Look Like
This is worth addressing directly because it's one of the most common sources of anxiety for first-time med spa patients. The fear of looking overdone, frozen, or obviously "worked on" is real, and it's largely a product of seeing bad aesthetic work, which unfortunately does exist.
Good aesthetic results don't announce themselves. They look like you, but rested. They look like your skin, but clearer and firmer. They enhance what's already there rather than replacing it with something artificial. At Aurelian Med Spa, the goal of every treatment plan is results that your friends notice without being able to explain why, not results that prompt the question of what you've had done.
That outcome starts with honest treatment planning, appropriate technique, and a provider who understands that less is almost always more, particularly for new patients. It also requires realistic expectations on the patient's side. Most treatments deliver their best results over a series of sessions rather than a single visit, and the patients who see the most dramatic long-term improvement are the ones who commit to a consistent plan rather than expecting a single session to do everything at once.
A Few Practical Things Worth Knowing
Pricing varies by treatment, and good providers are transparent about it. At Aurelian, we're happy to walk you through what any given treatment costs and what a realistic treatment series looks like financially before you commit to anything.
Most aesthetic treatments aren’t covered by insurance since they fall outside the scope of medically necessary care. However, some patients use FSA or HSA funds for certain procedures — worth asking about during your consultation if that's relevant to you.
Last but certainly not least, keep in mind that real results take time. The most common source of disappointment in aesthetic medicine is having unrealistic timelines and expectations. Collagen remodeling, pigment clearing, and skin tightening all unfold over weeks to months, not days. Patients who understand this going in tend to be far more satisfied with their outcomes than those who expect immediate transformation.
